Write a Science Opera (WASO) is a creative arts and science concept in education where pupils on different levels create a scientific performance together with teachers, opera artists and researchers. The WASO concept is an extension of the close cooperation that Stord/Haugesund University College has had with the Royal Opera House in London on the introduction of the “Write an Opera” methodology in Norway.
WASO was developed in order to meet the challenge in the EU and Norway of recruiting enough students who want a career within Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics (the STEM subjects). The WASO methodology takes children’s resources and ideas seriously. It offers an inquiry approach to scientific topics such as light, space, etc. and involves children in creative processes where all the tools of the opera, such as music, dance, costumes, side scenes and story, are being used.
WASO is a starting point for several STEAM-oriented projects. A finalised project in Portugal was a co-operation between Matos Caiano & Wandschneider, Bergen National Opera, the University of Stavanger and Stord/Haugesund University College coordinating this EEA project.
